Chapter 5 - The Husband’s Arrogant Threat

================================================================================
At 3:30 PM, Brandon violated the protective order.
He didn't call directly; he knew his number might be monitored. Instead, he sent a messenger to Claire’s law office with a formal, notarized settlement offer drafted by his budget divorce lawyer, Arthur Sterling.
The proposal was an insult wrapped in arrogance:
Elena surrenders all claims to the River North apartment master lease.
Elena forfeits all claims to the remaining joint account balance.
Elena agrees to pay $2,500 monthly in transitional spousal support to Brandon due to his 'reduced income capacity.'
In exchange, Brandon agrees not to pursue criminal theft charges against Margaret for the 'missing' $10,500.
Attached to the packet was a handwritten note from Brandon on company stationery:
‘Elena, sign this before 5:00 PM today. If you force this into court, I will tell the entire church community and your design clients that your mother is a senile thief. You know how fragile your reputation is. Be smart for once in your life.’
Claire looked at the note and burst into a dry, chilling laugh.
“The sheer narcissism of this man is breathtaking,” Claire said, tossing the letter into an evidence envelope. “He thinks he holds all the cards.”
“What is our response, Claire?” I asked.
“Our response is an emergency petition for an Ex Parte Judicial Asset Freeze and a Criminal Referral for Statutory Grand Larceny, Elderly Battery, and Extortion,” Claire replied.
At that exact moment, my phone buzzed with an incoming text from Brandon’s mother, Evelyn Vance:
‘Elena! You ungrateful girl! Brandon told me you left the apartment and took your mother! How dare you abandon my son after everything our family did for you! Lucas needs that wedding deposit money, and you are acting like a selfish child! Call Brandon right now and apologize!’
I looked at the screen, remembering the three weeks I spent changing Evelyn’s surgical dressings while she complained about the food I cooked for her.
I typed a single sentence in reply:
‘Tell Lucas to enjoy the $45,000 while he can. Because tomorrow, the court is taking it back.’
I blocked her number and turned back to Claire.

“Let’s finish this.”
