Chapter 4 - The Paper Trail of Three Brothers

================================================================================

By 1:00 PM, Claire’s conference room on the 22nd floor of the US Bank Center was covered in financial printouts, bank wire confirmations, and corporate registry filings.

Sitting beside Claire was David Vance (no relation), a senior forensic accountant specializing in marital asset concealment.

“Here is the anatomical breakdown of how your husband liquidated your future, Elena,” David explained, clicking his presentation remote to display the transaction matrix on the wall monitors.

The timeline was devastating:

Three Weeks Ago (August 2): Brandon executed a series of six unauthorized electronic wire transfers totaling $95,000 from our joint savings account to an offshore entity named Vanguard Apex Holdings LLC, registered in Delaware.

Two Weeks Ago (August 9): Brandon withdrew $45,000 in cashier’s checks, directly signing them over to his brother Lucas Vance to pay off a defaulted high-interest commercial loan on Lucas’s auto detailing shop.

Last Friday (August 16): Brandon wired $30,000 to his youngest brother Liam Vance, covering Liam’s personal credit card debts and purchasing a late-model sports coupe under Liam’s name.

“And what about the $10,500 he claimed was in his desk drawer?” I asked, leaning forward over the glass table.

David smiled thinly, pulling up a digital ATM transaction log from a Chase branch on Water Street.

“On the exact morning of the altercation—at 11:14 AM, four hours before you came home with groceries—Brandon personally deposited $10,500 in cash into a newly opened, private checking account under his sole name at a credit union across town.”

My breath caught.

“He withdrew the cash from our joint account three days earlier,” Claire added, tapping the table with her gold pen. “He hid it in his own private account, came home, and staged the drama to frame your mother for theft. He wanted to provoke you into abandoning the apartment so he could claim marital abandonment in a subsequent divorce petition.”

“He thought I was weak,” I murmured, feeling the cold fury settle into my bones like iron.

“He thought you wouldn't hire forensic investigators,” Claire countered. “And he certainly didn't expect us to discover what Vanguard Apex Holdings actually purchased with that $95,000.”
