Chapter 3 - The Bruise on Margaret’s Cheek

At 9:30 AM, Dr. Miriam Lawson at the Columbia St. Mary’s Emergency Trauma Center examined my mother under bright diagnostic lights.
The physician ran a specialized digital caliper across Margaret’s left zygomatic arch, documenting the soft-tissue swelling and sub-dermal capillary ruptures.
“Two distinct impact patterns,” Dr. Lawson dictated for the forensic record. “Linear contusions measuring approximately 4.5 centimeters, consistent with open-handed strikes delivered with significant force. Mild soft-tissue trauma to the left cervical muscle group from sudden lateral acceleration.”
Margaret sat quietly on the examination table, clutching my hand, her eyes downcast with the quiet shame that elderly victims of domestic abuse often carry.
“Did you lose consciousness, Mrs. Vance?” Dr. Lawson asked gently.
“No, Doctor,” Margaret whispered. “I just fell against the table. The vase broke.”
“Write exactly what caused it,” I told the doctor, my voice ringing with calm, lethal clarity. “Document that her son-in-law struck her twice inside her home.”
Dr. Lawson nodded with solemn respect. “Under Wisconsin mandatory reporting statutes, this forensic chart is transmitted directly to the Special Victims and Elder Abuse Division of the Milwaukee Police Department.”
Detective Marcus Miller of the MPD arrived at the clinic twenty minutes later. He was a seasoned investigator with twenty years on the force, carrying a digital audio recorder and a protective order petition.
“Mrs. Vance, Elena,” Detective Miller said, introducing himself. “Attorney Claire Montgomery briefed our unit on the incident. Based on the physical injury patterns and the witness statement, we are issuing an immediate, temporary 72-hour Domestic Abuse Injunction against Brandon Vance.”
“What does that mean, Detective?” Mom asked softly.
“It means Brandon Vance is barred from contacting either of you, approaching your workplace, or entering your hotel,” Detective Miller explained. “If he violates this order, he is subject to mandatory, immediate arrest.”
I signed the victim verification forms with a steady hand.
