Chapter 9 - The Gavel of Absolute Justice

Four months later, Courtroom 7B of the New York County Supreme Court was packed to maximum capacity for the sentencing of Vance Vance and the final dissolution decree.
Chief Judge Eleanor Sterling looked down from the bench with severe judicial authority.
“Vance Vance, you engaged in a calculated, predatory campaign of grand larceny, corporate espionage, and domestic intimidation against the woman who provided you with a life of luxury,” Judge Sterling declared.
The judge brought down her heavy wooden gavel with a resounding crack.
“On all counts of Grand Larceny, Corporate Embezzlement, and Felony Trade Secret Theft, Vance Vance is hereby sentenced to twelve years at Green Haven Correctional Facility without the possibility of early parole, followed by mandatory financial restitution of $1,840,000.”
Judge Sterling struck the gavel a second time.
“Furthermore, the marriage between Sloan Sterling and Vance Vance is hereby declared null, void, and annulled ab initio. The petitioner retains 100% of all pre-marital and acquired assets, and a permanent, lifetime protective order is enacted across all jurisdictions.”
Jolene burst into frantic sobs, burying her face in her hands, while Tinsley wept quietly in shame.
Vance collapsed forward onto the table, weeping in dry, ragged gasps as state marshals stepped forward, secured the heavy transport chains around his waist, and escorted him through the iron holding door forever.

I stood up, smoothed down my blazer, and walked down the center aisle flanked by Julian Hayes.
I stepped out onto the courthouse steps into the brilliant winter sunshine, feeling the cool, pure air fill my lungs. I was free. I was triumphant. And my life was completely, beautifully my own.
