Chapter 7 - The Interrogation of Vance

By 2:00 PM, Vance Vance was seated inside the windowless interrogation room of the New York County District Attorney’s Office at One Hogan Place.

His designer clothes had been replaced by a coarse grey detention jumpsuit. His hair was unwashed, his eyes bloodshot and swollen from hours of frantic panic, his wrists secured to the steel table by heavy iron chains.

Assistant District Attorney Marcus Cole entered the room, tossed a three-hundred-page evidentiary brief onto the metal surface, and pulled up a chair.

“You’re looking at twelve to fifteen years in state prison, Mr. Vance,” ADA Cole announced with clinical detachment. “Grand Larceny in the First Degree, Corporate Identity Theft, Fiduciary Embezzlement, and Criminal Trade Secret Espionage.”

Vance began hyperventilating, tears and sweat dripping onto his orange collar.

“It was Victor Lucian’s idea!” Vance sobbed, pointing his chained hands toward the two-way mirror. “Lucian approached me at the Hamptons gala! He said Sloan was too powerful, that she treated me like a trophy husband! He promised me if I gave him the client database, I’d be a fifty-percent partner in his new European firm! I didn't want to hurt Sloan!”

“You siphoned $1.8 million from your wife’s company, Vance,” ADA Cole replied coldly. “You set up fake consulting accounts for your mother and sister, and you attempted to physically intimidate your victim into silence inside her own home.”

“Sloan is my wife!” Vance wailed, slamming his cuffed hands against the table. “She won't send me to prison! Let me call her! She loves me! We can settle this as a family!”

Behind the one-way glass in the observation room, I stood beside Julian Hayes, watching the pathetic spectacle.

I felt no anger. I felt no lingering heartbreak. I felt only the deep, unshakeable peace of a woman who had cut out a cancer before it could spread.

I picked up my leather portfolio, turned to Julian, and said softly, “File the expedited petition for Absolute Annulment on the grounds of criminal fraud and domestic coercion. I want his name erased from every corporate and personal record by Friday.”
