Chapter 5 - The Trail of the Stolen Millions

At 8:00 AM the following morning, the 45th-floor executive conference room of Hayes & Sterling Law on Park Avenue was bathed in crisp, golden autumn sunlight.
Julian Hayes sat across from me, reviewing forty pages of decrypted financial transactions on his tablet.
“The audit is airtight, Sloan,” Julian said, sliding a thick forensic dossier across the glass table. “Vance wasn't merely stealing operating cash for lifestyle spending. He was executing a calculated scheme to bankrupt Sterling Vanguard.”
I took a slow sip of black coffee. “Explain it to me, Julian.”
“Eight months ago,” Julian began, pointing to a series of wire logs, “Vance entered into a clandestine contract with your primary industry competitor, Aegis Global Media, owned by Victor Lucian.”
My eyes narrowed into razor slits. “Victor Lucian?”
“Vance promised to provide Lucian with your proprietary algorithmic branding software and your private client database in exchange for a $2.5 million offshore signing bonus and a 20% equity stake in Aegis Global’s new holding entity,” Julian explained. “The humiliation campaign at your loft last night was designed to provoke you into filing an emotional, messy divorce without forensic discovery, allowing him to walk away with the corporate secrets before the board noticed the missing funds.”
“He wanted to rob me blind, destroy my company, and hand the ruins to Victor Lucian,” I murmured, feeling a cold, righteous clarity settle into my bones.
“Furthermore,” Julian added with a grim smile, “we found that Jolene Vance had registered a fraudulent charitable foundation in Westchester—The Vance Heritage Society—which received $400,000 in ‘consulting fees’ routed directly from your company’s vendor accounts.”
I closed the folder with a sharp, decisive snap.
“Julian,” I said softly.
May you like
“Yes, Sloan?”
“File the emergency criminal referrals with the Manhattan District Attorney’s Major Economic Crimes Bureau. And notify the board of directors of Aegis Global that their corporate espionage scheme has just become an active federal racketeering case.”
