Chapter 7 - THE FIRST CALL FROM SWITZERLAND

Lucas called on a Tuesday evening.
His face appeared on my screen.
He wore a white shirt.
Behind him was a modern apartment.
“Hey, sweetheart.”
I smiled.
“Hi.”
He looked relaxed.
“How's Denver?”
“Cold.”
He laughed.
“Zurich is beautiful.”
I stared at the background.
A framed desert photograph hung on the wall.
Interesting choice for Switzerland.
He continued.
“I miss you.”
I nodded.
“I miss the man I thought I married.”
He frowned.
“What?”
I smiled faintly.
“Nothing.”
He leaned closer.
“Listen, I need a favor.”
My stomach tightened.
“What kind?”
“Some paperwork.”
I stared.
He continued.
“Daniel Pierce is going to send you a few forms. Just sign them and send them back.”
I looked at him.
“What are they for?”
He hesitated.
“Tax planning.”
I almost laughed.
Again.
Tax planning.
I smiled.
“Send them to Eleanor.”
Lucas frowned.
“Who's Eleanor?”
“My attorney.”
Silence.
Then his expression changed.
“Claire.”
I looked directly at him.
“Yes?”
“What attorney?”
I smiled.
“The one helping me divorce you.”

For several seconds, Lucas didn't move.
Then the call disconnected.
