Chapter 10 - THE DAY LUCAS CAME HOME

Lucas returned to Denver three weeks later.
He arrived at the house without warning.
I was packing books in the living room.
He stood in the doorway.
“Claire.”
I looked up.
“Lucas.”
He stared at the boxes.
“What are you doing?”
“Moving.”
His expression changed.
“Where?”
I smiled faintly.
“Somewhere you don't get to decide.”
He stepped closer.
“Can we talk?”
I nodded.
“Through our attorneys.”
His jaw tightened.
“Claire, you're destroying our marriage.”
I stared.
Then laughed.
“No, Lucas.”
I looked directly at him.
“You destroyed our marriage when you decided I was too stupid to discover the truth.”
He opened his mouth.
I continued.
“You lied about Switzerland.”
“You leased a home with Melanie.”
“You tried to move money without my permission.”
“And now you're angry because I stopped cooperating.”
May you like
Lucas looked away.
For the first time, he had nothing to say.
