Chapter 6 - THE WOMAN WEARING HIS GRANDMOTHER'S EMERALDS

Celeste arrived at the penthouse that evening.

She wore the emerald necklace.

Dominic stared at it.

“Take that off.”

She blinked.

“What?”

“The necklace.”

Celeste laughed.

“Dominic, don't be ridiculous.”

He stepped closer.

“It belonged to my grandmother.”

“You gave it to me.”

“I allowed you to wear it.”

Her expression hardened.

“What's gotten into you?”

Dominic looked at her.

“Eliza's pregnant.”

Celeste went still.

Then laughed.

“That's impossible.”

Dominic's eyes narrowed.

“Why?”

“She told everyone she couldn't have children.”

His jaw tightened.

“She had fertility complications.”

Celeste looked away.

Dominic stepped closer.

“Did you know?”

Celeste stared.

“Know what?”

“That she was pregnant.”

“No.”

He studied her.

Then said quietly, “I don't believe you.”

Celeste's expression changed.

“Dominic.”

He held out his hand.

“The necklace.”

She stared.

Then unclasped it.

The emeralds dropped into his palm.

For a moment, Dominic remembered his grandmother's words.

Family isn't the people who take your name. It's the people who protect your heart.

He closed his fist around the necklace.

And realized he'd given a family heirloom to someone who had helped him destroy his own family.
