Chapter 3 - FOUR HUNDRED WITNESSES

By morning, photographs from the gala had spread across Chicago.

Dominic Rourke.

Celeste Wynn.

The emerald necklace.

Eliza walking away.

Society columns called it a scandal.

Business publications questioned whether the public humiliation would affect Blackridge's investors.

Dominic ignored the headlines.

He wanted one thing.

His wife.

But Eliza wouldn't answer.

Her attorney had sent formal notice.

All communication would go through counsel.

Dominic sat in his office staring at the divorce petition.

Griffin entered.

“Sir.”

Dominic looked up.

“What?”

“The board wants a meeting.”

“About what?”

“The gala.”

Dominic laughed bitterly.

“Of course.”

Griffin hesitated.

“There's something else.”

He placed a tablet on the desk.

A photograph appeared.

Celeste speaking with a man outside a private club.

Dominic recognized him.

Victor Hale.

A businessman connected to one of Blackridge's competitors.

Dominic's expression hardened.

“When was this taken?”

“Three weeks ago.”

“Why wasn't I told?”

Griffin looked at him.

“Because Celeste told security you already knew.”

Dominic stared.

He remembered Eliza's warning months earlier.

Something about Celeste doesn't feel right.

He had dismissed it.

Called her jealous.

Now he wondered what else he'd ignored.
