The final threat came when Amelia was three weeks old.
Eliza was leaving a pediatric appointment when a dark sedan pulled alongside the curb.
A man stepped out.
“Eliza Rourke?”
She stopped.
Something about his voice frightened her.
She turned toward the building.
The man followed.
“Mrs. Rourke, we need to talk.”
Eliza reached for her phone.
Then he grabbed her arm.
She screamed.
A security guard rushed toward them.
The man released her and fled.
Police arrived minutes later.
Eliza held Amelia close.
Her heart pounded.
She called Paige.
Then her attorney.
Dominic learned what had happened later that afternoon.
He wanted to rush to the hospital.
Instead, he called Margaret.
“Is she safe?”
“Yes.”
“Does she need anything?”
“She's receiving appropriate support.”
Dominic closed his eyes.
“Tell her I'll cooperate with anything investigators need.”
Margaret hesitated.
“Dominic.”
“Yes?”
“She doesn't want you to come.”
He swallowed.
Then nodded.
“I understand.”

Even when those choices excluded him.
