Chapter 8 - The Guardianship Showdown

================================================================================

Two months later, Courtroom 4B of the Buncombe County Family Court convened for the permanent custody hearing of Leo Vance.

Sitting across the aisle was Marcus’s court-appointed defense attorney, alongside Marcus’s estranged sister, Evelyn, who had flown in from Atlanta in a desperate bid to claim guardianship of Leo in order to access the newly established multi-million-dollar estate trust.

Judge Katherine Holloway presided over the bench with stern, impenetrable authority.

Evelyn’s attorney stepped forward, adjusting his notes. "Your Honor, my client is the child’s paternal aunt. She possesses a stable corporate career and a spacious home in suburban Atlanta. We submit that removing the child from the immediate environment of this tragedy is essential for his psychological recovery."

Judge Holloway looked down from the bench. "And what does the petitioner say?"

Our attorney, Samuel Price, stood up. "Your Honor, Leo has lived his entire life surrounded by his mother’s family in Asheville. But more importantly, Leo has explicitly requested to address the court himself."

Judge Holloway nodded gently. "Bring the young man forward."

Leo stood up from our table. He wore a crisp white button-down shirt and navy trousers, holding his mother’s silver pendant in his small left hand. He walked to the center podium, looking directly up at the judge without a single trace of hesitation.

"Leo," Judge Holloway said in a warm, gentle voice. "Tell me where you want to live."

"With Aunt Sarah," Leo answered clearly, his voice resonating through the wood-paneled courtroom. "Because when my mom was in danger, Aunt Sarah listened. She never told me I was confused. She makes sure I do my homework, she cooks Mommy’s favorite blueberry pancakes on Sundays, and she promised me that truth is the only thing that matters in our house."

Judge Holloway smiled, her eyes softening with profound respect.

She picked up her heavy wooden gavel and brought it down with a sharp, decisive crack.

"The court finds that it is unequivocally in the best emotional, physical, and psychological interest of the minor child to grant sole, permanent legal and physical custody to Sarah Sterling. The parental rights of Marcus Vance are hereby terminated with prejudice, and all secondary petitions are dismissed."

My mother and I embraced Leo tightly as the courtroom erupted in quiet, joyful tears from our friends and neighbors.

Leo looked up at me, his eyes bright and clear. "Mom is happy today, Aunt Sarah."

"Yes, she is, my brave boy," I whispered, kissing his forehead. "She is so proud of you."
