Chapter 7 - The Accomplice in Chains

================================================================================

On Friday morning, I visited the Buncombe County Detention Center.

I sat in the small, soundproof visitor booth behind the thick Plexiglas partition, resting my hands calmly on my legal portfolio.

The heavy steel door buzzed. Marcus was led into the booth by two armed corrections officers.

He was wearing a bright orange prison jumpsuit, his wrists and ankles secured with heavy steel transport chains. The polished, charismatic businessman had vanished. His face was hollow, his hair unwashed, his bloodshot eyes darting around the room with pathetic desperation.

He picked up the black telephone receiver with trembling hands.

I lifted mine.

"Sarah," Marcus gasped, his voice cracking into ragged sobs. "You have to talk to the district attorney. Tell them Rachel was unstable! Tell them she made that recording because she wanted to ruin me! It was an argument! A terrible, tragic accident!"

I looked at him with steady, unblinking eyes.

"You bought that navy dress on Saturday afternoon at a boutique in Biltmore Village, Marcus," I said, my voice level and icy. "You paid cash for heavy-duty industrial thread at a craft shop two hours later. You planned every single detail of her murder before she even walked into the kitchen on Sunday."

"I was desperate, Sarah!" he wept, pressing his forehead against the cold glass. "The bookmakers were going to burn the house down! I did it to keep a roof over Leo’s head!"

"Do not speak my nephew’s name," I replied, each word hitting him like a hammer. "You pushed his mother down the stairs, let her choke on her own blood, and made an eight-year-old boy sit beside her body for hours. You are not a father. You are a predator."

I pulled a certified document from my portfolio and pressed it against the glass.

"Under North Carolina’s Slayer Statute, you have been permanently and completely disqualified from receiving a single cent from Rachel’s estate, her life insurance, or our family trust. Every asset has been transferred into the Leo Sterling Protected Heritage Trust, managed solely by me."

May you like

Marcus screamed in blind rage, slamming his cuffed hands against the glass until the guards forced him backward onto the concrete floor.

"You will never see Leo again, Marcus," I said softly, hanging up the receiver. "You will spend the rest of your life staring at iron bars."
