Chapter 3 - The Midnight Voice from the Casket

================================================================================

"Give me that!" Marcus roared, lunging forward with his arm outstretched to snatch the device from my hands.

Before his fingers could touch my sleeve, my cousin David—a broad-shouldered volunteer firefighter from Black Mountain—stepped squarely in front of him, planting an open hand against Marcus’s chest and shoving him hard against the wall.

"Back up, Marcus," David growled. "Nobody touches Sarah until we hear what's on that recorder."

The living room fell into a suffocating silence. Thirty relatives and lifelong neighbors formed an unbroken ring around the casket.

My hands shook, but my thumb pressed the center playback toggle on the titanium unit.

A brief hiss of ambient static crackled through the miniature speaker. Then, Rachel’s voice filled the room. It wasn't distorted. It was clear, deliberate, and chillingly calm.

‘If you are listening to this file,’ Rachel began, ‘it means I did not survive Sunday night, and Marcus has told the family I slipped on the stairs.’

My mother let out a strangled gasp, collapsing backward onto the sofa as Aunt Martha caught her shoulders.

‘My name is Rachel Sterling-Vance. I am thirty-four years old. On Friday morning, I discovered that Marcus had siphoned ninety-four thousand dollars from our son’s college trust fund into an offshore sports-betting account in Belize. When I told him I was filing for sole custody and forensic asset recovery, he told me that dead wives don't testify in probate court.’

Marcus began shaking violently, pressing himself flat against the entryway drywall. "Turn it off... it’s an AI deepfake! She’s trying to frame me from the grave!"

‘He doesn't know I am sewing this recorder into the dress on Sunday afternoon,’ Rachel’s voice continued relentlessly. ‘He bought this navy dress yesterday and left it on our bed, telling me we were going out for dinner. But I know my husband. He chose this specific dress because the high collar and stiff shoulders will hide the bruises on my neck if he tries to strangle me. If you are hearing this, check the secondary partition on this drive. It contains the ambient audio from our kitchen tonight.’

A soft digital click sounded from the speaker.

Then came the audio recorded on Sunday at 9:14 PM.

The sound of ceramic plates smashing on oak. Rachel’s voice, sharp and terrified: ‘Marcus, stop! Leo is playing outside in the treehouse! Let go of my arm!’

Then Marcus’s cold, breathless snarl: ‘You should have signed the insurance waiver, Rachel. Nobody investigates a clumsy woman who trips on wet stairs.’

The sound of violent scuffling followed. A sickening, hollow crack of wood. A woman’s sharp cry cut off abruptly, followed by the heavy, rhythmic thuds of a body tumbling down fourteen steps onto the slate landing.

Then, absolute silence.

And finally, Marcus’s heavy breathing as he walked down the staircase, whispering to himself: ‘It’s done. Now put the dress on her.’

The recording clicked off.
