Chapter 4 - The Broken Alibi

================================================================================

For ten seconds, the only sound in the house was the rhythmic ticking of the grandfather clock.

No one moved. No one spoke. The relatives who had offered Marcus coffee and whispered words of condolence backed away from him as if the air around him had turned to poison.

Marcus stood pinned against the coat rack, his eyes darting frantically between the front door, the kitchen hallway, and the group of men blocking his path.

"It was an accident," Marcus whimpered, his arrogance completely dissolving into raw, pathetic terror. "We were wrestling for the phone! She slipped! I panicked... I didn't want the police to think I did it on purpose! You have to believe me!"

Leo stepped forward from beside the casket. He stood with his small shoulders squared, his chin raised, holding his mother’s silver wind-chime pendant tightly in his fist.

"You're lying, Dad," Leo said in a voice that didn't waver. "I was in the treehouse like Mom told me. I looked through the kitchen window. I saw you push her from the top step with both hands. And then I saw you drag her into the laundry room to change her clothes before you called nine-one-one."

Marcus’s mouth fell open. "Leo... you were supposed to be watching a movie..."

"Mom told me to watch the stairs," Leo whispered. "She told me you were dangerous."

Outside, the quiet mountain night was shattered by the scream of sirens.

Red and blue emergency strobes swept through the living room windows, painting the walls and the casket in rhythmic flashes of crimson and cobalt. Three cruisers from the Asheville Police Department and an unmarked SUV from the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation pulled onto the lawn, tires churning through wet gravel.

Marcus turned and bolted toward the rear French doors.

He threw the latch open and sprang onto the back deck, but before his foot hit the grass, two armed Buncombe County sheriff's deputies vaulted the railing, tackling him face-first into the mulch.

"Marcus Vance! Stay down! Do not move!"

The sharp, metallic click of steel handcuffs snapping around his wrists echoed across the dark yard. When the deputies hauled him up, covered in mud, sobbing and cursing into the cold air, not a single person inside that house looked away.
