Chapter 5 - The Forensic Seal at Dawn

================================================================================
By 3:30 AM, my mother’s home had been cordoned off as an active command post.
Detective Miller of the SBI sat at the dining room table with two digital forensics analysts, reviewing the raw WAV audio file directly extracted from Rachel’s titanium recorder.
"The acoustic integrity is pristine," the lead analyst reported, showing the audio frequency graph on his laptop screen. "The vocal frequencies match Marcus Vance’s known baseline with a ninety-nine point eight percent confidence interval. Furthermore, the internal clock syncs precisely with the forty-five-minute delay before his emergency call was placed on Sunday night."
Dr. Katherine Harrison, the Chief Medical Examiner for Western North Carolina, arrived under emergency judicial order to conduct a preliminary examination of the body before transport.
Dr. Harrison gently parted the high collar of the navy blue dress.
Beneath the stiff fabric and heavy cosmetic foundation, four distinct, deep-purple crescent contusions were clearly visible across Rachel’s trachea and left clavicle—unmistakable fingertip impressions from an adult hand.
"The mortuary staff was instructed to perform immediate embalming without an autopsy based on a falsified medical waiver Marcus submitted on Monday morning," Dr. Harrison said, her voice tight with professional outrage. "This high-collar dress was deliberately selected to prevent the mortician from questioning the strangulation marks before the casket was sealed."
I stood beside the gurney as the medical team prepared to transport Rachel to the state forensic pathology center in Raleigh for a full evidentiary reconstruction.
I touched my sister’s cold fingers, whispering against her hair: "You won, Rachel. You gave him no way out. I’ve got Leo. I promise you, he will never be afraid again."

As the ambulance doors closed and the vehicle drove down the winding mountain road into the mist, the first pale rays of dawn began to crest over the Blue Ridge summits.
The nightmare was no longer a secret. The hunt for justice had begun.
