Vanessa called me three days later.
I almost ignored the number.
Then answered.
“Evelyn.”
Her voice sounded strained.
“I need to talk to you.”
I stared at the phone.
“About what?”
“Nathaniel.”
I closed my eyes.
“Vanessa, I'm not interested in discussing your relationship.”
She swallowed.
“It's not about that.”
I waited.
Then she whispered, “I think he's lying to me too.”
I sat down.
“What do you mean?”
Vanessa explained that Nathaniel had promised her a substantial financial settlement after their marriage.
He had also asked her father to invest in a private development project.
But the documents she'd recently seen didn't match what Nathaniel had told her.
I listened carefully.
Then said, “You need an independent attorney.”
Vanessa was silent.
“Evelyn.”
“Yes?”
“I'm sorry.”
I closed my eyes.
The apology arrived too late to save anything.
But it was still something.

I took a breath.
“Then tell the truth.”
