Chapter 6 - THE MISSING FORTY-SEVEN MILLION

The next morning, Gabriel Whitmore arrived at my attorney's office with a stack of documents.

I had barely slept.

My marriage was over.

My grandfather's secret had been revealed.

And I had discovered that the company my husband controlled might actually be tied to my inheritance.

Gabriel placed a financial report on the table.

“Evelyn, there's something else.”

I looked up.

“What?”

He pointed to a series of transactions.

“Forty-seven million dollars moved through several affiliated entities over the last eighteen months.”

I frowned.

“Moved where?”

“That's what we're trying to determine.”

The transfers had been approved through an executive authorization system.

Nathaniel's credentials appeared on several approvals.

But the records also showed activity from an account associated with Margaret Ashford.

I stared.

“His mother?”

Gabriel nodded.

“We're not drawing conclusions yet.”

I looked down.

“Then what happens?”

“We preserve the records, retain forensic accountants, and follow the money.”

I swallowed.

For the first time, I understood that my grandfather's legacy might be in danger.

Not because of the public humiliation.

Because someone had been using the company as though its assets belonged to them personally.
