Chapter 5 - THE WIFE THEY THOUGHT HAD NOTHING

When we returned to the ballroom, Nathaniel was waiting.

His face was red.

“Evelyn.”

I stopped.

“Yes?”

He glanced at Samuel.

“We need to discuss this privately.”

I looked at him.

“Earlier, you wanted to discuss my worth in front of three hundred people.”

His jaw tightened.

“This is different.”

“Is it?”

Vanessa approached.

Her hand rested over her pregnant stomach.

“Evelyn, there's no need to be hostile.”

I looked at her.

“I'm not speaking to you.”

Vanessa's smile disappeared.

Margaret stepped forward.

“You've embarrassed this family enough.”

Samuel turned toward her.

“Mrs. Ashford, I would advise against continuing this conversation.”

Margaret stared.

“Who are you to advise me?”

Samuel's expression remained calm.

“The trustee responsible for protecting the controlling ownership interest in your family's principal company.”

Margaret went silent.

I looked at Nathaniel.

For four years, he'd insisted I was nothing without him.

Now he was standing in front of me, desperate to know how much power I actually possessed.

And I realized something.

May you like

I didn't need to humiliate him.

The truth was doing that without my help.
