Chapter 7 - THE CLINIC THAT WANTED A CHILD

The blue room had been Evelyn's study.
It was small.
Quiet.
Filled with books.
Silas remembered her sitting there late at night, reading medical journals and correspondence from Deaf advocacy organizations.
She'd wanted Leo to have choices.
Not promises.
Not miracles.
Choices.
Inside a locked drawer, investigators found a hard drive.
The files contained emails, contracts, and financial records.
A private medical group had approached the Costello family about an experimental program.
It promised access to advanced hearing technology.
Specialists.
Exclusive treatment.
But the documents revealed something else.
The clinic's investors had been negotiating with Victor.
They wanted a substantial financial commitment from Silas.
And influence over his logistics network.
The proposed agreements contained broad consent provisions that Evelyn had refused to sign.
Silas stared at the screen.
“They wanted my son as leverage.”
An investigator nodded.
“That appears to be part of the plan.”
Khloe looked toward Leo.
He was drawing at a nearby table.
She swallowed.
“Does he know?”
Silas shook his head.
“Not everything.”
Khloe nodded.
“Then let's keep the explanation age-appropriate.”
Silas looked at her.
“Will you help?”
She hesitated.
Then nodded.
“Yes.”
They sat beside Leo.
Khloe signed carefully.
SOME ADULTS MADE BAD CHOICES.
Leo watched.
THEY WANTED YOU TO GO SOMEWHERE YOU DIDN'T WANT TO GO.
His face tightened.
Khloe continued.
YOUR DAD IS WORKING TO KEEP YOU SAFE.
Leo looked toward Silas.
Then signed:
DAD BELIEVES ME NOW?
Silas didn't need the translation.
He recognized the signs.
His eyes filled.
He nodded.
Then signed slowly:
YES. I BELIEVE YOU.
Leo stared.
Then leaned into his father.
Silas held him.
May you like
And for the first time, he understood that the most important promise he could make wasn't that he'd fix everything.
It was that he'd listen.
