Chapter 4 - THE FLIGHT THAT WAS NEVER SUPPOSED TO LAND

Silas listened without interrupting.
Then his face hardened.
“Victor changed the destination?”
Khloe nodded.
“The captain received the request.”
Silas stood.
“Without my authorization?”
“Yes.”
He looked toward the rear cabin.
Then reached for the intercom.
“Captain, this is Silas Costello.”
“Sir.”
“Do not change our destination.”
A pause.
“Understood.”
Silas continued.
“And do not accept further instructions from anyone except me.”
He ended the call.
Then looked toward Khloe.
“Something's wrong.”
She nodded.
Silas walked toward the rear partition.
Victor was sitting with a tablet.
He looked up.
“Boss.”
Silas stopped.
“Why did you change our landing instructions?”
Victor's expression didn't change.
“Security precaution.”
“Whose decision?”
“Mine.”
Silas stared.
“You don't make that decision.”
Victor leaned back.
“I was protecting you.”
“From what?”
Silence.
Silas stepped closer.
“Victor.”
The bodyguard looked away.
Then he said:
“Geneva is complicated.”
Silas's jaw tightened.
“Explain.”
Victor sighed.
“There are people who want access to Leo.”
Silas felt cold.
“Who?”
Victor hesitated.
Then he said:
“People your wife was involved with.”
Silas stared.
“Evelyn?”
Victor nodded.
Silas felt anger rise.
“My wife disappeared eleven months ago.”
Victor looked at him.
“Maybe she didn't disappear.”
The words hung between them.
Silas stepped closer.
“What are you saying?”
Victor swallowed.
“I'm saying she made choices.”
Silas's hands curled into fists.
“Where is she?”
Victor looked away.
Silas's voice dropped.
“Where is my wife?”
Victor said nothing.
Silas turned toward the cabin.
“Khloe.”
She appeared immediately.
“Take Leo to the front.”
Khloe nodded.
She returned to the child.
Woke him gently.
Signed:
WE ARE MOVING TO A QUIETER PLACE.
Leo looked toward the rear cabin.
His face tightened.
WOLF MAN?
Khloe nodded.
HE WILL STAY AWAY FROM YOU.
Leo reached for her hand.
They moved toward the front.
Behind them, Silas looked at Victor.
“Sit down.”
Victor stared.
Silas continued.
“You're going to tell me everything.”
Victor's jaw tightened.
“And if I don't?”
Silas looked at him.
Then said:
“Then the moment we land, you answer to the authorities.”
Victor laughed bitterly.
“You think the police are going to protect you?”
Silas stared.
“No.”
May you like
He looked toward the cockpit.
“But they might protect my son.”
