Chapter 11 - THE MOTHER WHO CAME HOME

Evelyn returned to Chicago under a coordinated safety plan.

Leo waited at the airport with Silas and Khloe.

He wore a blue sweater.

Held a stuffed wolf.

And watched the arrivals doors.

Then Evelyn appeared.

Leo froze.

For one heartbeat, he didn't move.

Then he ran.

Evelyn dropped her bag.

Knelt.

Opened her arms.

Leo crashed into her.

She held him tightly.

Both cried.

Silas stood several feet away.

Watching.

Evelyn signed against Leo's shoulder.

I'M HERE.

Leo pulled back.

His hands moved quickly.

YOU DIDN'T LEAVE ME?

Evelyn shook her head.

NEVER BECAUSE I STOPPED LOVING YOU.

He cried harder.

Silas approached slowly.

Evelyn looked up.

Their eyes met.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then Silas whispered:

“Welcome home.”

Evelyn stood.

She looked at him.

“Silas.”

He swallowed.

“I'm sorry.”

She shook her head.

“We both have things to talk about.”

He nodded.

“Yes.”

They didn't embrace immediately.

Too much had happened.

Too much trust had been broken.

But they walked out of the airport together.

For Leo.

That evening, the family sat around the dinner table.

Khloe had planned to leave.

But Leo insisted she stay.

He signed:

KHLOE IS FAMILY TOO.

Everyone laughed softly.

Khloe's eyes filled.

Silas looked toward her.

Then signed:

THANK YOU.

She smiled.

May you like

And signed back:

YOU'RE WELCOME.
