Chapter 14 - THE FAMILY THAT LEARNED TO LISTEN

Two years after the flight to Geneva, the Costello family looked different.
Silas had stepped away from criminal operations under legal scrutiny.
He focused on legitimate businesses and community work.
Evelyn returned to her advocacy work.
She supported families navigating disability services and communication access.
Leo was seven.
Confident.
Curious.
Funny.
He loved wolves.
Airplanes.
Drawing.
And correcting his father's signing mistakes.
One evening, Silas signed:
I WANT TO EAT THE AIRPLANE.
Leo burst into laughter.
Silas frowned.
“What?”
Evelyn laughed too.
“You signed airplane instead of apple.”
Silas groaned.
Leo signed:
DAD IS SILLY.
Everyone laughed.
Later, Silas sat beside Evelyn on the porch.
The evening air was cool.
Leo played in the garden.
Evelyn looked toward him.
“He's happy.”
Silas nodded.
“Yes.”
She smiled.
“So are you.”
Silas looked at her.
“I am.”
For a moment, neither spoke.
Then Evelyn reached for his hand.
Silas swallowed.
“Do you ever think about leaving again?”
She looked at him.
“Not because I want to.”
He nodded.
She continued.
“But I need to know we can keep being honest.”
Silas squeezed her hand gently.
“We will.”
Evelyn smiled.
In the garden, Leo looked up.
He signed:
COME PLAY!
Silas stood.
“Duty calls.”
Evelyn laughed.
They walked toward their son.

And for once, Silas didn't feel like a man trying to control the future.
He felt like a father living in the present.
