Chapter 5 - THE MOTHER WHO DIDN'T ABANDON HIM

Evelyn Costello had disappeared on a Tuesday.

No goodbye.

No explanation.

No note.

Silas had returned home from a meeting to find her closet half-empty.

Her phone disconnected.

Her car missing.

Victor had told him she'd left voluntarily.

He'd produced messages.

Bank transfers.

Travel records.

All suggesting Evelyn had chosen to disappear.

Silas had believed him.

Not because he wanted to.

Because the evidence seemed overwhelming.

But now Leo's words had changed everything.

Khloe sat beside the sleeping boy.

She watched his small chest rise and fall.

Then noticed something.

A thin silver bracelet around his wrist.

It was engraved with tiny letters.

E.C.

Evelyn Costello.

Khloe gently examined it.

The clasp was unusual.

A small compartment sat beneath the engraved plate.

She didn't open it.

Not yet.

Instead, she waited until Leo woke.

Then signed:

DID YOUR MOM GIVE YOU THIS?

Leo nodded.

WHEN?

He thought for a moment.

Then signed:

BEFORE SHE WENT AWAY.

Khloe swallowed.

DID SHE SAY ANYTHING?

Leo nodded.

His hands moved slowly.

KEEP IT. DON'T GIVE IT TO WOLF MAN.

Khloe felt cold.

She looked toward Silas.

“Mr. Costello.”

He approached.

“What?”

She showed him the bracelet.

Silas stared.

“Evelyn gave him that.”

Khloe nodded.

“There's a compartment.”

Silas looked toward Leo.

“Can we open it?”

Khloe signed the question.

Leo hesitated.

Then nodded.

Silas carefully released the clasp.

Inside was a tiny folded strip of waterproof paper.

He unfolded it.

Three words.

TRUST THE LIGHTHOUSE.

Silas stared.

He knew the phrase.

Evelyn used to call their summer home on Lake Michigan the lighthouse.

It wasn't an actual lighthouse.

It was a white house built on a bluff.

Silas swallowed.

“She left something there.”

Khloe looked at him.

“Then why are we flying to Geneva?”

Silas stared toward the cockpit.

For the first time, he understood.

Someone had arranged this trip to take Leo away from the place where Evelyn had hidden the truth.

He reached for the intercom.

“Captain.”

“Yes, sir?”

“Can we return to Chicago safely?”

A pause.

“We'll need to review fuel, weather, and diversion options.”

Silas nodded.

“Do it.”

Then he looked toward Leo.

The boy was watching him.

Silas raised his hands.

Awkwardly.

Slowly.

He signed the few words he knew.

DAD. LOVE. YOU.

Leo stared.

Then smiled through tears.

And signed back:

LEARN MORE.

Silas laughed.

May you like

A broken, relieved sound.

“I will.”
