Chapter 6 - The Poison of Greed

When Croft was dragged into the interrogation room, he didn't hold out for ten minutes.
Faced with twenty-five years in state prison and federal wire fraud charges, Croft turned state's evidence, signing a forty-page sworn confession detailing every step of the conspiracy.
"It was all Vanessa's idea," Croft stammered, weeping into his sleeves. "She targeted Adrian two years ago at the Montgomery charity gala. She spent eighteen months studying Clara's mannerisms, wearing her favorite perfume, and pretending to love the kid. But the boy wouldn't warm up to her. He kept calling for his mother. Vanessa couldn't stand it. She wanted him erased."
Meanwhile, Vanessa sat in Cook County Jail.
Her wealthy family in Boston, upon receiving the leaked video footage of the dog cage and the micro-beacon recordings, issued a public statement completely disowning her, refusing to post a single dollar toward her bail.
My family attorney, Nathan Cross, visited her in the holding facility to serve the formal eviction notice, civil restraining orders, and lawsuit for intentional infliction of emotional distress.

"She tried to claim Adrian was abusing her," Nathan reported back to me that afternoon. "She told the guards she was the victim. But when the warden showed her the live feed of Croft's confession, she collapsed on the floor and started tearing her hair out."
"Let her rot," I said. "My only focus is my son."
