Chapter 5 - The Paper Trail of Malice

At 7:00 AM, Detective Diaz and Assistant State's Attorney Karen Hayes met me at the precinct headquarters.
When Ray played the audio and video retrieved from the bear’s micro-beacon, the room descended into a chilling silence.
"This elevates the case from aggravated battery to premeditated criminal conspiracy for financial gain," Attorney Hayes said, her eyes flashing with fury. "Who owns the trust fund?"
"My late wife, Clara, was the sole heiress to the Montgomery shipping estate," I explained, laying out the estate documents. "Upon her death, a twenty-million-dollar irrevocable trust was established exclusively for Noah, maturing on his twenty-first birthday. The trust bylaws state that if Noah is deemed mentally incapacitated by a board-certified psychiatrist, the legal guardian—or surviving maternal figure in the household—gains complete administrative control over the dividend payouts."
"Five million dollars a year in tax-free dividends," Detective Diaz observed. "Julian Croft lost his medical license in California eight years ago for falsifying competency evaluations for wealthy conservatorships before relocating to Illinois."
"Issue the warrants," Attorney Hayes instructed. "Warrant for Julian Croft for Conspiracy to Commit Aggravated Child Abuse, Fraud, and Extortion. And upgrade Vanessa's bail to five million dollars cash-only."
Within two hours, tactical units raided Croft's private clinic in downtown Chicago.

They caught Croft at his desk, shredding fabricated psychiatric reports diagnosing five-year-old Noah with "Violent Early-Onset Schizophrenia and Anti-Social Psychosis."
In Croft’s safe, detectives recovered a signed contract between him and Vanessa, detailing a 50-50 split of Noah's trust fund payouts over the next fifteen years.
