Chapter 10 - Sunlight and Soccer Fields

One year after the trial.
The afternoon sun cast a warm golden light across the lush green grass of the Oakridge Community Soccer Park.
The whistle blew, and Noah—wearing his bright red team jersey with number 7 on the back—dribbled the ball past two defenders, his cleats kicking up bits of fresh turf.
"Go, Noah! Take the shot!" I shouted from the sidelines, cupping my hands around my mouth with a broad, beaming smile.
Noah took a powerful kick with his right foot. The soccer ball sailed straight into the top right corner of the net.
Goal!
The entire sideline erupted into cheers. Noah leaped into the air, his face flushed with pure, untamed joy, and sprinted straight toward the sidelines, throwing himself into my waiting arms.
I lifted him high onto my shoulders as his teammates gathered around, clapping and laughing.
"Daddy! Did you see that?!" Noah beamed, his hazel eyes sparkling in the afternoon sunlight. "I scored!"
"I saw it, champion!" I laughed, holding his legs securely as we walked toward the ice cream stand. "Best goal of the season!"
We sat on the wooden bench beneath the shade of an ancient oak tree, enjoying double scoops of mint chocolate chip ice cream. Noah leaned his head against my arm, watching the other kids play, completely safe, completely healed, and surrounded by unconditional love.
