Chapter 3 - The Threshold of Justice

Within eight minutes, the quiet suburban avenue lit up with the flashing red and blue lights of three squad cars and a paramedic unit.

Officer Marcus Vance and Detective Elena Diaz stepped through the side gate into the backyard, flashlights cutting through the dusk.

When the beams hit the rusted iron cage, the metal dog food bowl, and the shredded remnants of the blue bear in the mud, Detective Diaz’s face hardened into stone.

"Paramedics, check the boy immediately," Diaz ordered.

A kind female paramedic wrapped Noah in a heated thermal blanket, gently lifting his dirty sneaker to inspect his scraped foot. "Hypothermia stage one, dehydration, and multiple contusions along his wrists and knees consistent with metal confinement," the paramedic reported.

Vanessa rushed toward Officer Vance, her eyes brimming with theatrical tears. "Officer, thank God you're here! This is a terrible misunderstanding! The boy was playing a game in the garden, and Adrian flew into an irrational rage—"

"Quiet," Detective Diaz commanded, stepping between Vanessa and my son. Diaz turned on her body camera. "Ma'am, is this your residence?"

"I am Mr. Sterling's fiancée," Vanessa said haughtily. "I have full authority here."

"Did you place this five-year-old child in an animal enclosure?"

"It was disciplinary time-out!" Vanessa snapped, losing control. "Parents have a right to discipline their children! He was insubordinate!"

"Under Illinois state law, confining a minor in an animal enclosure and denying food constitutes Class X Felony Child Abuse and Unlawful Restraint," Diaz said calmly, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from her duty belt. "Turn around and put your hands behind your back."

"Take your hands off me!" Vanessa screamed, thrashing as the cuffs clicked tightly around her wrists. "Do you know who my father is?! Adrian, call your lawyers! Tell them to drop this right now!"

"I've already called my lawyers, Vanessa," I said coldly from the patio, holding Noah close as the paramedics treated his scrapes. "They're preparing a lifetime restraining order and assisting the State Attorney with your felony indictment."

As they loaded Vanessa into the back of the cruiser, she slammed her head against the window, screaming obscenities into the night until the siren drowned her out.
