Chapter 4 - The Hidden Eye

We spent the night at Northwestern Memorial Pediatric Hospital.
Noah fell asleep in the hospital bed, his small hand locked inside mine even in his dreams. Every time a nurse entered the room, his little shoulders tensed, relaxing only when he heard my voice.
At 3:00 AM, my private investigator and long-time security specialist, Ray Miller, arrived at the hospital room. He carried a heavy forensic laptop and a sealed evidence envelope.
"Adrian," Ray said in a low whisper, motioning toward the corridor. "We went through the house with a fine-tooth comb. She turned off the main living room cameras two weeks ago, claiming they were glitching."
"I know," I replied, running a hand over my exhausted face. "She told me the server was down."
Ray opened the envelope and produced a small, silver tracking pendant. It was shaped like a small bell—the collar charm Clara had sewn onto Barnaby the bear five years ago.
"Clara was smart, Adrian," Ray said, a grim smile touching his lips. "When she gave Noah that bear before she passed, she didn't just put a voice recorder inside. She had me install an encrypted audio-video micro-beacon in the collar bell, linked to a backup cloud loop. It was meant as a child-safety tracker in case Noah ever got lost in a crowd."
My heart pounded against my ribs. "Did it record?"
Ray plugged a flash drive into his laptop and turned the screen toward me.
The video loaded. Clear, 1080p footage, recorded from the bear's perspective on the kitchen counter two days earlier.
On screen, Vanessa stood in the kitchen talking on her phone via speaker. A man's voice came through clearly:
Man: "Is the kid breaking down yet?"
Vanessa: "Almost. I locked him in the pantry for six hours yesterday. He cried until he threw up. The nanny quit this morning because I accused her of stealing."
Man: "Good. The child psychologist I hired is ready. Once Noah is officially diagnosed with severe childhood psychosis and behavioral incompetence, Adrian will be forced to institutionalize him. That leaves the twenty-million-dollar trust fund under your sole guardianship as Adrian's wife."
Vanessa: "I put him in the dog cage outside. By the time Adrian comes back on Friday, the brat will be completely broken."
May you like
My hands gripped the edge of the table until the metal groaned.
The man's voice on the recording was unmistakable: Dr. Julian Croft, a prominent society psychiatrist and Vanessa's former fiancé whom she claimed to have cut ties with years ago.
