Chapter 8 - The Confrontation in Federal Custody

Forty-eight hours later, in the windowless, reinforced basement interrogation room of the Federal Detention Center at SeaTac, Ryan Vance sat in an orange jumpsuit, his hands and feet secured to the floor with heavy steel chains.
The heavy magnetic door clicked open. Dr. Elena Morrison entered, accompanied by Julian Hayes—the preeminent military and corporate litigation attorney who had flown in to represent Major Claire Vance.
Julian placed a dark-blue leather legal portfolio on the metal table, popping the brass latches open with a sharp, resonant snap.
Ryan looked up, his face hollow and gaunt. "Where is Claire? Why didn’t she come? I have the right to see my wife!"
"You have no wife, Mr. Vance," Julian Hayes replied calmly, taking a seat across from him. "This is a certified Emergency Petition for Absolute Dissolution of Marriage, accompanied by a permanent Lifetime Restraining Order signed by Chief Judge Alvarez of the Western District of Washington."
Julian turned to page four.
"Under these terms, you have completely surrendered all parental rights to Maya Sterling-Vance. You are legally forbidden from ever coming within five thousand feet of Claire or the child for the rest of your natural life."
"You can't take my daughter from me!" Ryan roared, rattling his chains against the table. "I'm her biological father!"
"You forfeited that right the second you left her mother in hypovolemic shock on a kitchen floor," Dr. Morrison interjected, her voice burning with cold fury. "I have submitted sixty pages of surgical records, cardiac telemetry, and 911 audio recordings to the federal docket. In the medical community's unanimous opinion, your actions constitute Depraved Indifference and Attempted Manslaughter. The state prosecutor has added those charges to your federal indictment."
Julian Hayes slid a final document across the table.
"Furthermore, Crestline Systems has undergone a complete emergency corporate reorganization. Under federal defense contracting bylaws and Claire’s foundational patent ownership, 100% of the company's patents, physical assets, and remaining capital—valued at $28 million—have been transferred entirely into the Maya Sterling-Vance Irrevocable Protection Trust, with Major Claire Vance as sole trustee."
Ryan stared at the papers. His company, his money, his reputation, his family—everything was gone. He was penniless, facing decades in a maximum-security federal penitentiary, while the wife he had abandoned owned every single asset he had ever claimed.

"Sign the surrender of parental rights and corporate transfer, Ryan," Julian Hayes said coldly. "Or the United States Attorney will pursue the maximum thirty-year sentence without parole."
With shaking, broken fingers, Ryan picked up the pen and signed his name on the line. When he finished, he buried his face in his hands and wept uncontrollably onto the cold steel table.
