Chapter 3 - The General's Wrath

Thirty-five thousand feet above the Pacific Northwest aboard an Air Force C-32 transport jet, four-star General Arthur Sterling listened as the ICU charge nurse recounted the horrors of Friday night.
He heard about the shattered glass, the pools of blood on the kitchen tile, the desperate 911 call from a dying mother, and the husband who had casually stepped over his convulsing wife to eat steak at a country club.
General Sterling’s grip on his steel pen tightened until the metal groaned. To the global defense community, Arthur Sterling was a feared strategist who directed the Pentagon's most sophisticated cyber warfare commands. But to me, he was Uncle Arthur—the battle-brother who had held my father in his arms as he died, swearing a sacred oath that he would watch over me as his own blood.
"Is Claire alive?" Sterling demanded, his voice low and deadly.
"She survived, General," the nurse replied. "Her daughter, Maya, is stable in the NICU. Major Vance is conscious but severely weakened. Her husband has ignored thirty emergency calls from this hospital."
"Understood," Sterling said. "Deploy a tactical security detachment from Joint Base Lewis-McChord to seal off her ICU wing immediately. No civilian enters that floor without top-secret clearance. Divert our flight path to Seattle-Tacoma. Maximum thrust."
Sterling hung up and looked at his chief aide, Colonel Marcus.
"Colonel."
"Sir!"
"Pull the complete financial and corporate intelligence file on Crestline Systems and its CEO, Ryan Vance. Contact the Department of Defense Inspector General. I want a forensic audit of the $45 million federal defense contract awarded to Crestline six months ago—the software architecture authored entirely by Claire before she took maternity leave."
"Right away, General. What is our objective?"
General Sterling stood tall, his four silver stars gleaming in the cabin light.
"Ryan Vance believed that my niece was merely a meek, dependent housewife he could exploit, rob, and leave to die on the floor. He forgot that Major Claire Vance is a decorated aerospace engineer whose encryption algorithms protect our nation's satellite defense grid. He committed attempted depraved manslaughter against a commissioned officer of the United States Armed Forces."

Sterling looked out into the storm clouds gathering over Seattle.
"When we touch down, Ryan Vance's world turns to ash."
