Chapter 6 - Evelyn's Unraveling Grand Illusion

"Bleeding to death?" Ryan whispered, his hands trembling violently. "No... no, she was exaggerating! She’s always dramatic! She just wanted to ruin Mother’s party! Where is the baby? Where is my child?"
General Sterling looked through him with pure contempt. "Major Claire Sterling-Vance suffered a catastrophic Grade-Three placental abruption twelve minutes after you slammed that door in her face. If she had not possessed the military discipline to crawl through broken glass, dial emergency dispatch, and unlock that deadbolt with her last ounce of strength, both she and your daughter, Maya, would be lying in morgue drawers right now."
A suffocating silence descended over the street. Neighbors standing on their lawns watched Ryan with horror and disgust.
At that moment, a sleek white Bentley pulled up behind Ryan’s Porsche. Evelyn Vance stepped out wearing a lavender silk suit, having driven over to deliver leftover birthday catering and inspect the nursery.
"Ryan! What is this ridiculous spectacle?" Evelyn shouted, waving her manicured hand dismissively at the armed soldiers. "Officers, clear this street immediately! My son has board meetings tomorrow morning!"
General Sterling turned his icy gaze upon her. "Evelyn Vance. Sole owner of Mercer Island Estates."
"Yes, I am," Evelyn replied haughtily, raising her chin. "And who are you to speak to me in that tone?"
Special Agent Henderson stepped forward, unzipping a leather binder and pulling out a thick sheaf of federal court orders with bright blue seals.
"Mrs. Vance, I am Special Agent Henderson with the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Defense Criminal Investigative Service. I have an emergency federal search and seizure warrant signed by Chief Magistrate Judge Alvarez."
"A warrant for what?" Evelyn shrieked.
"For procurement fraud, international money laundering, and grand misappropriation of federal defense funds," Henderson announced loudly. "Over the past eighteen months, your son Ryan diverted $12.4 million in restricted Department of Defense research grants—funds awarded specifically for Major Claire Vance’s proprietary quantum cyber-encryption projects—directly into your personal shell company, Evelyn Manor Holdings LLC."
Evelyn’s face turned ghastly white. Her hand flew to her throat, clutching her pearl necklace. "That was a legitimate management consulting fee!"

"That money paid for your yacht charter in Monaco, your luxury country club dues, and the five-carat diamond ring on your finger," Henderson replied ruthlessly. "All assets and bank accounts belonging to Evelyn Manor Holdings have been frozen by federal order. Federal marshals are currently placing padlocks on your Mercer Island estate."
Evelyn collapsed against the side of her Bentley, hyperventilating as the house of cards she had spent decades building crumbled into dust.
