Chapter 1 - The Cold Slam of the Door

The first contraction hit without warning.
One moment I was standing in the kitchen pouring myself a glass of water.
The next...
A sharp wave of pain ripped through my body so violently that the glass slipped from my hand and exploded across the tile floor.
"Ryan..."
I grabbed the edge of the counter, struggling to stay upright.
"I need help."
My husband barely glanced away from his phone.
He was fastening the cuffs of his tailored charcoal suit, preparing to leave for his mother Evelyn's sixty-fifth birthday dinner as though it were the only event that mattered.
Another contraction struck.
I doubled over.
Breathing became almost impossible.
"I think the baby's coming..."
My voice shook.
"Please take me to the hospital."
Ryan let out an irritated sigh.
"Claire, you're exaggerating again."
His words hurt almost as much as the contractions.
I was thirty-eight weeks pregnant.
Our obstetrician had repeatedly warned us that my dangerously high blood pressure made this pregnancy high-risk.
She had looked Ryan directly in the eye during our last appointment.
"If she develops severe pain, bleeding, dizziness, or blurred vision, don't wait."
"Call emergency services immediately."
Now...
Every one of those symptoms was happening.
My dress clung to me with sweat.
The room spun.
Dark spots clouded my vision.
I could barely remain standing.
Ryan grabbed his car keys.
"You always manage to ruin my family's special occasions."
"Our child needs you," I whispered desperately.
He laughed without looking back.
"My mother only celebrates turning sixty-five once."
"You've been pregnant for months."
"You can survive another few hours."
Then he walked out.
The front door slammed shut behind him.
I called him.
Once.
Twice.
Again.
Every call went straight to voicemail.
A few minutes later...
Warm blood ran down my legs.
My heart nearly stopped.
Hands shaking uncontrollably, I dialed 911.
Then I crawled across the kitchen floor toward the front door, praying I could unlock it before losing consciousness.
"My husband left me..."
I sobbed into the phone.
"I'm in labor..."
"There's blood..."
"Please..."
"Hurry."
The ambulance arrived only minutes later.
After that...
Everything blurred together.
Flashing emergency lights.
Voices shouting medical instructions.
Hands lifting me onto a stretcher.
I remember one paramedic squeezing my hand.
Another yelled toward the driver.
"Possible placental abruption!"
"Alert the surgical team immediately!"
The world slowly faded into darkness.
May you like
And I never saw my husband again...
...until two days later.
