Chapter 5 - The Convoy in the Driveway

At 2:45 PM on Sunday, Ryan Vance’s Porsche Cayenne cruised around the final corner onto Crestview Terrace. He was humming a jaunty tune, expecting a clean house, a repentant wife holding a quiet baby, and a hot meal waiting on the table.

As his car crested the hill, the song died in his throat.

His suburban driveway was completely barricaded by three matte-black, heavily armored Oshkosh tactical military transport vehicles, flanked by four Seattle Police Department cruisers with flashing strobe lights.

United States Military Police officers in desert camouflage and tactical plate carriers stood at every corner of the property, assault rifles slung across their chests. Yellow federal evidence tape sealed off the entire front perimeter. Federal agents wearing black windbreakers labeled ‘DOD-OIG’ (Department of Defense - Office of the Inspector General) and ‘CID’ (Army Criminal Investigation Division) were carrying heavy server racks and steel cases out of his front door.

Ryan slammed on his brakes, tires skidding on the asphalt.

"What the hell is this?" Ryan gasped, throwing the car into park and jumping out. "What are you doing to my house? This is private property!"

He stormed toward the walkway, furious. "Hey! Put those server drives down! Who authorized this? I am Ryan Vance, CEO of Crestline Systems! I own this property!"

Two towering Military Police officers stepped directly into his path, raising heavy tactical gloves.

"Halt. Step back and keep your hands visible," the lead sergeant barked in a voice like cracking stone.

"Are you out of your minds?" Ryan screamed. "I pay millions in taxes! Where is my wife? Where is Claire? Did she cause a gas leak with her stupidity? Get off my property!"

The heavy front door swung open. Walking down the stone steps with measured, terrifying authority was General Arthur Sterling, flanked by two full-bird colonels and Special Agent Henderson of the Defense Criminal Investigative Service.

General Sterling was in full Service Dress uniform—four gleaming silver stars on each shoulder, nine rows of combat ribbons, and eyes as cold as a frozen ocean.

Ryan froze. His corporate arrogance vanished instantly.

"General... Sterling?" Ryan stammered, his voice trembling. "What is happening here? Claire mentioned you were an old family acquaintance, but this... this is an illegal raid!"

General Sterling walked until he stood six inches from Ryan’s face. When he spoke, his voice was a low, devastating growl.

"You left a decorated combat officer of the United States Armed Forces bleeding to death on a shattered glass floor so you could eat prime rib and drink scotch with your mother."

Every drop of blood drained from Ryan’s face.
