Chapter 22 - THE ANNULMENT

The order arrived on a Thursday.
Marriage annulled.
Financial claims resolved.
My funds remained mine.
Julian retained responsibility for debts originating in his name.
The record acknowledged material misrepresentations and unauthorized financial conduct surrounding the marriage.
I read the order twice.
Expected fireworks.
Felt tired.
Mom brought champagne.
Dad brought Chinese takeout.
Nora brought a cake that said:
CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR 14-HOUR FREE TRIAL
I laughed until I cried.
Rachel came too.
Amanda joined by video.
Sarah sent flowers.
Ethan sent a card:
Welcome back to yourself.
I liked that one most.
At midnight everyone left.
I sat alone.
No husband.
No mother-in-law.
No legal emergency.
Just quiet.
I picked up the old marriage certificate.
The one I packed that morning.
It no longer represented a future.
Just evidence that for fourteen hours, something legally existed.
I placed it in a file.
Not burned.
Not shredded.
History does not disappear because we dislike it.
May you like
Then I went to sleep.
