Chapter 11 - THE WOMAN IN ROOM 312

The first criminal hearing brought another surprise.

A woman waited outside courtroom 312.

She was seventy.

White hair.

Green coat.

She asked:

“Elena?”

“Yes?”

“My name is Margaret Mercer.”

Julian’s aunt.

Robert’s sister.

Victoria hated her.

That alone made her interesting.

Margaret attended our wedding but left early.

She now handed me an envelope Robert had given her fifteen years earlier.

If Victoria ever involves the boys' spouses in the family finances, give them this.

Inside was a letter.

Robert wrote that Victoria had repeatedly used emotional pressure to obtain money from relatives.

He believed she would eventually do the same through the sons.

He begged Margaret to intervene.

“Why didn't you?”

I asked.

Her eyes filled.

“Because Robert died. Victoria cut me off. The boys stopped answering.”

“You could have found them.”

“Yes.”

No excuses.

“I failed.”

That honesty mattered.

Margaret did not ask forgiveness.

She provided information.

She also revealed that Ethan’s medical expenses, though real, had been partly covered by insurance and charity.

Victoria exaggerated the debt for years.

Why?

Leverage.

Sacrifice becomes power when nobody checks the accounting.

Margaret had receipts.

Victoria had told Julian she lost nearly $700,000 saving Ethan.

Actual unreimbursed cost?

About $118,000.

Still enormous.

Not seven hundred thousand.

The family mythology had been inflated by half a million dollars.

Julian had spent his adult life believing he owed his mother everything.

May you like

Including apparently his wife.
