Chapter 13 - THE CAMERA ABOVE THE STAIRS

Remember the stairs?

The place Julian found me with my suitcase?

A security camera covered the foyer.

I had forgotten it because Victoria claimed it had been broken for months.

It wasn't.

The cloud subscription was active under Ethan’s old email.

He recovered the password.

We found the footage.

Everything.

Julian climbing the stairs.

My suitcase.

Victoria entering.

My words:

“I don’t live here anymore.”

Her:

“Don't you dare walk out that door!”

Then Julian taking my suitcase.

Rachel arriving.

Later footage mattered even more.

Thirty minutes after I left, Victoria and Julian stood in the foyer.

Audio clear.

Victoria:

“Why didn't you take the check before she packed?”

Julian:

“Because she hid it.”

Victoria:

“You knew she had it upstairs.”

Julian:

“I wasn't going to steal from her.”

Victoria:

“Don't be stupid. You're married.”

Silence.

Then Julian said:

“Mom, this went too far.”

Victoria answered:

“It went too far because you let her leave.”

That recording complicated everything.

Julian had participated.

But he also had a line.

A weak line.

Late.

Still there.

He did not plan to physically steal the cashier's check.

Victoria apparently expected him to.

The distinction did not save our marriage.

But it mattered for truth.

People are rarely exactly as bad as our anger wants them to be.

May you like

Or as innocent as love once insisted.
