Chapter 1 - THE GARAGE

“Your pension is mine now, Robert! As long as you live under this roof, I decide if you eat, if you set foot inside the house, and how long you stay locked in the garage!”
Those were the very first words my son, Daniel, heard when he arrived unannounced at my home on a hot August afternoon.
I was sitting on a thin, filthy mattress thrown directly onto the concrete floor of my own garage in suburban Chicago. At sixty-eight years old, I had served almost four decades as a decorated lieutenant in the city fire department. I earned a retired pension of $3,500 a month. Yet, for two full days, I had been surviving on stale saltine crackers and warm water from a rusted outdoor hose.
Daniel froze in the doorway, his eyes wide with horror as he looked at me.
“Dad… what happened to your face? Why are you sleeping out here?”
I couldn't even bring myself to look him in the eye. It was more humiliation than fear.
Three months earlier, my daughter, Gabriela, and her husband, Javier, had arrived at my front door carrying four heavy suitcases. They claimed they had been evicted from their apartment after Javier lost his job and fell behind on rent. I had been living alone since my wife, Elena, passed away, and the four-bedroom house had plenty of space. How could I say no to my own daughter in her time of need?
At first, they were attentive. Gabriela cooked, while Javier ran errands and even offered to drive me to the bank. One evening after dinner, Javier laid a stack of legal papers on the kitchen table.
“Robert, sign this power of attorney so I can handle the utility payments and property filings for you,” Javier said smoothly. “That way, you don't have to worry about a thing.”
Gabriela kissed my cheek. “Do it, Dad. Javier knows how to handle these administrative things.”
I signed it.
It was the single worst mistake of my life.
Slowly, my monthly bank statements stopped arriving in the mail. My debit card “disappeared.” My cell phone vanished. Javier insisted everything was completely under control. Whenever I asked about my pension, he would wave his hand dismissively, telling me I was getting old, that I was confused, and that it was better if he managed the family finances.
One afternoon, I managed to use a neighbor's phone to call my bank. I discovered that my monthly pension check was being automatically routed into a brand-new checking account that Javier controlled exclusively. In less than ninety days, tens of thousands of dollars had been drained—spent on a massive flat-screen television, designer clothes, steakhouse dinners, payments on a used pickup truck, and top-shelf liquor.
I confronted him right in the living room.
“That is stealing, Javier!”
Javier stood up, grabbed me by the collar, and slammed me against the hallway wall.
“Watch your mouth, old man,” he snarled. “With that signed power of attorney, I can easily prove you’ve lost your mind. A cheap nursing home is a lot cheaper than keeping you in this house.”
Gabriela was standing just a few feet away. She saw my bruised shoulder. She saw the sheer terror in my eyes.
