Chapter 19 - THE HOUSE GOES DARK

The old Mercer house sold in winter.
The night before closing, Ethan invited Julian to retrieve family photographs.
A storm knocked out power.
They entered with flashlights.
In the basement they found an old locked cabinet.
Inside:
Robert’s tools.
Tax returns.
Christmas ornaments.
And a stack of VHS tapes.
Family recordings.
One tape changed everything.
Christmas, twenty years earlier.
Julian was twelve.
Ethan four.
Victoria ordered Julian to clear plates.
Julian said:
“But Dad doesn't.”
Victoria answered:
“Your father works. You earn your place.”
Same phrase.
Earn your place.
Julian had not invented it.
He inherited it.
Then Robert entered.
He heard.
He said:
“No child earns his place in his family.”
Victoria laughed.
The tape cut.
Julian watched it three times.
He later sent me a digital copy.
No message.
I understood.
There had once been another model in that house.
Robert.
Imperfect.
Sometimes absent.
But he had known.
No child earns his place in his family.
Neither does a wife.
Neither does a husband.
