Chapter 9 - The Federal Gavel of Justice

Eight months after my return, Courtroom 3B of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia was packed to maximum capacity for the sentencing of Margaret and Paige Walker.

Sitting in the front row of the gallery were Gwen and me.

Gwen looked breathtakingly radiant in an elegant cream wool dress, her thick chestnut hair falling gracefully past her shoulders, holding my hand with quiet, unbreakable strength. I wore my formal Army Service Uniform, adorned with my combat ribbons and honorable discharge insignia.

Margaret and Paige sat at the defense table in bright orange prison jumpsuits, their hands and feet bound in heavy steel transport chains. Their former vanity and arrogance had been completely crushed by months in county holding; their hair was disheveled, their faces pale and sunken.

Chief Judge Evelyn Sterling took the bench with severe, uncompromising moral authority.

"Margaret Walker, Paige Walker," Judge Sterling declared, her voice echoing through the silent stone chamber. "You engaged in a calculated, depraved, and monstrous campaign to exploit a deployed soldier serving his nation overseas, while systematically starving, imprisoning, and denying life-saving medical care to his wife."

Judge Sterling brought down her heavy wooden gavel with a resounding crack that shook the courtroom.

"Margaret Walker is hereby sentenced to fifteen years at the Federal Correctional Institution, Aliceville, without the possibility of early parole."

Margaret collapsed forward onto the table, letting out a broken, hysterical wail.

"Paige Walker is sentenced to ten years at the Federal Correctional Institution, Danbury, followed by full financial forfeiture of all seized assets totaling $98,400."

Judge Sterling struck the gavel a second time.

"All recovered funds, along with complete clear title to the real estate at 442 Ridgeview Road, are permanently awarded to Gwen Walker as mandatory criminal restitution."

As the federal marshals hauled the two weeping convicts through the iron holding door forever, Gwen looked up at me with clear, untroubled eyes.

"Luke?"

"Yes, my love?"

"Let’s sell that house. And let’s build something truly ours."

I smiled from the depths of my soul, kissing her forehead. "Whatever you want, sweetheart. It’s all yours."
