Chapter 5 - The Ledger of Stolen Remittances

While Gwen was being airlifted to the world-class oncology pavilion at Walter Reed, Captain Hayes and a team of forensic accountants from the Defense Criminal Investigative Service (DCIS) completed the digital audit of Margaret Walker’s bank accounts.

Sitting inside the mobile command unit parked three blocks away, Captain Hayes reviewed sixty pages of decrypted bank statements with Detective Marcus Stone of the County Sheriff’s Department.

"It’s sickening," Detective Stone said, shaking his head in sheer disgust. "Over forty-eight months, Sergeant Luke Walker wired exactly $98,400 from his hazardous duty pay directly to his mother’s account, designated for the purchase of the land deed, construction of the family home, and Gwen’s living expenses."

Captain Hayes highlighted the expenditure trails:

The Construction Title: Margaret and Paige had registered the two-story house exclusively under Luke’s name to avoid state property taxes, meaning Luke held 100% legal title to the real estate.

The Vehicle Embezzlement: $48,000 withdrawn in lump sums to purchase the luxury King Ranch truck registered to Paige.

The Medical Denial: Exactly $0.00 spent on medical care, pharmaceuticals, or insurance for Gwen across four years.

The Intercepted Allotments: Over $14,000 in direct emergency spousal stipends diverted into Paige’s personal shopping accounts.

"And what about the shed in the backyard?" Captain Hayes asked.

"Forensic photography has already documented the storage shed," Detective Stone replied. "Sub-zero drafts, no heating, mold-infested drywall, and an active padlock latch on the exterior door. That constitutes Felonious False Imprisonment and Criminal Endangerment of a Dependent Adult."

Captain Hayes closed the dossier with a sharp, echoing snap.

"Let’s give Mrs. Walker and her daughter the homecoming they truly deserve."
