Chapter 7 - The Eviction at Dawn

The front door of the house was thrown open with a resounding, concussive crash.
Margaret shrieked, dropping her wine glass onto the hardwood floor.
Marching through the entryway were Captain Julian Hayes, Detective Marcus Stone, and four armed deputies from the County Sheriff’s Department, accompanied by military police officers in tactical gear.
"FEDERAL OFFICERS! NOBODY MOVE!" Detective Stone commanded, unholstering stamped arrest warrants.
Paige leaped to her feet, knocking her chair backward, screaming in hysterical panic: "What is this?! Luke! Call your security! What are these police doing in our house?!"
"This is not your house, Paige," I said, rising to my feet. "The title, the mortgage, and every nail in these walls were paid for with my blood, sweat, and combat deployments. And you have fifteen minutes to vacate my property."
Margaret scrambled forward, her face turning an ugly shade of mottled crimson. "Luke! I am your mother! You cannot bring police into my home! I raised you!"
Captain Hayes stepped forward, presenting the documents Margaret and Paige had signed two hours earlier.
"Margaret Walker, Paige Walker," Captain Hayes announced with unyielding military authority. "Pursuant to the signed and notarized affidavits executed this morning, you have formally confessed under penalty of perjury to the systematic embezzlement of $98,400 in Department of Defense allotments, military identity theft, and grand larceny."
Detective Stone pulled heavy steel handcuffs from his tactical belt.
"Furthermore," Detective Stone added coldly, "you are under arrest for Criminal Abuse and Felonious False Imprisonment of a Dependent Adult."
CLACK.
The steel handcuffs snapped shut around Margaret’s wrists.
"Luke! Please! I’m your mother!" Margaret wailed, tears smearing her expensive makeup as she was forced face-down onto her own dining table. "It was Paige’s idea! Paige told me Gwen was faking it!"
"You lying bitch!" Paige screamed, thrashing against two deputies as handcuffs were locked behind her back. "You took the money to buy your jewelry! Luke, help me!"
I stood tall, watching the two weeping, screaming parasites get dragged out the front door in heavy iron chains.
Outside, the commercial tow truck hooked up the King Ranch truck, hoisting it onto the flatbed under the shocked stares of twenty neighbors gathering along the sidewalk.

The locks on the house were re-keyed by military locksmiths.
The nightmare was over.
