Chapter 2 - The One Hundred and Fifty Dollars for Hair

The storage shed was freezing, smelled of damp drywall and motor oil, and had a single, cracked window covered by an old army blanket.

I sat on the narrow foam mattress on the concrete floor, holding Gwen against my chest. She was trembling so violently that her teeth clicked together. Beneath the threadbare flannel shirt, her ribs felt like fragile bird bones.

"Show me the receipt, Gwen," I whispered, pressing my lips to her bare, scarred scalp.

With shaking fingers, Gwen reached beneath the thin pillow and pulled out a faded, folded slip of paper.

It was a handwritten receipt from a local specialty wig salon in town:

Item: 22 inches of virgin chestnut hair.

Payout: $150.00 cash.

Date: November 14.

Tears leaked from the corners of her swollen hazel eyes.

"My hair was the only thing I owned that they couldn't lock in the safe, Luke," Gwen wept, burying her face into my military wool jacket. "I called Margaret five times from the clinic when the doctor found the lump. She answered the speakerphone with Paige laughing in the background. She told me if I wanted to play dying princess, I should find a sugar daddy to pay for it."

"And the phone calls you made to my base in Jordan?" I asked, my voice dropping into a register of cold, absolute death.

"Paige took my SIM card," Gwen choked out. "She told the cellular company my phone was lost and redirected all account authorizations to her new iPhone. Every time you called, Paige sent an automated message saying I was at the grocery store or sleeping off a headache."

I looked at the cuts on her scalp.

"Why the razor marks, baby?"

Gwen looked down at her bruised hands. "I had to shave it myself with a rusted disposable razor in the dark after I sold the braid... because Paige said having stubble made me look like an inmate and refused to let me use the bathroom mirror."

I closed my eyes, drawing a slow, silent breath.

During four years in combat zones, I had faced mortar strikes, ambushes, and desert storms without flinching. But sitting on that cold concrete, holding the woman I had promised to protect before God while my own flesh and blood bled her dry... my soul hardened into indestructible armor.

"Listen to me, Gwen," I murmured, cupping her frail face in my calloused palms. "You survived the fire. Now watch me bring the rain."
