Chapter 4 - The Specialist at the Military Medical Center

At 8:15 AM, while Margaret and Paige were upstairs getting dressed to visit luxury car dealerships, an unmarked black medical transport van pulled into the rear alley behind the property.
Captain Julian Hayes—a senior military attorney with the Army JAG Corps and my former commanding officer—stepped out of the passenger side, flanked by two military police officers and Dr. Robert Bennett, Chief of Oncology at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.
I carried Gwen out of the storage shed wrapped in a clean, thick wool Army blanket.
Dr. Bennett performed an immediate on-site vitals check, his face darkening with grave professional concern as he listened to her shallow breathing and examined the biopsy site on her chest.
"Severe cachexia, Stage-3 invasive ductal carcinoma, and critical electrolyte depletion," Dr. Bennett reported to Captain Hayes. "She needs immediate inpatient admission, high-potency intravenous nutrient rehydration, and emergency targeted oncology stabilization."
"Is she stable for transport, Doctor?" Captain Hayes asked.
"Yes. We are flying her by military medical helicopter to Walter Reed in Bethesda immediately."
I climbed into the transport van beside Gwen, holding her cold, fragile hand in both of mine.
Gwen looked at me, her eyes wide with sudden, disbelieving tears as she saw the medical team, the uniforms, and the life-saving equipment around her.
"Luke... who are these men?" she whispered.
"This is the United States Army, Gwen," I answered softly, kissing her knuckles. "And they take care of their own."
Captain Hayes turned to me, handing me an encrypted tactical radio.
"Luke, the federal warrants for Military Dependent Abandonment, Fiduciary Wire Fraud, and Grand Larceny under the Uniform Code of Military Justice and State Penal Code are being signed by Judge Miller right now. We move on this house at 11:00 AM."

I nodded, my eyes burning with absolute, lethal focus.
"I will be waiting on the porch, Captain."
