Chapter 9 - The Federal Gavel of Justice

Six months later, Courtroom 6B of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois was packed to capacity for the sentencing of Gia Vance and Dr. Victor Crane.
Sitting in the front row of the gallery were Lorenzo and me. Nico, now fourteen months old, sat proudly on Lorenzo’s lap, healthy, chubby-cheeked, and laughing softly as he played with a wooden toy train.
Chief Judge Evelyn Harrison took the bench with stern, unshakeable authority, adjusting her glasses as she reviewed the five-hundred-page sentencing memorandum.
“In the matter of the United States versus Gia Vance and Victor Crane,” Judge Harrison declared, her voice ringing through the stone chamber. “The defendants engaged in a calculated, depraved, and monstrous campaign of premeditated murder, infant poisoning, and massive financial embezzlement.”
Judge Harrison struck her heavy wooden gavel with a resounding crack.
“Gia Vance, for the crimes of First-Degree Murder, Attempted Murder of a Minor, and Federal Wire Fraud, you are hereby sentenced to Life Imprisonment without the possibility of parole, to be served at the Federal Correctional Institution, Aliceville.”
Gia collapsed onto the defense table, sobbing hysterically as marshals hauled her away in chains.
“Victor Crane, for your gross betrayal of the medical profession and active conspiracy in homicide, you are sentenced to Life Imprisonment without parole, with immediate revocation of all medical credentials.”

As the heavy iron doors clicked shut behind the convicts, Lorenzo wrapped his arm around my shoulders, pressing a gentle kiss to the top of Nico’s head.
Justice was absolute, complete, and unshakeable.
