Chapter 7 - The Traitor's Confession

In the adjacent holding suite, Gia Vance sat in the cold glare of the interrogation lamps, her designer clothes wrinkled, her makeup ruined by hours of bitter tears.

When the heavy steel door opened, it wasn't federal agents who stepped inside.

It was Lorenzo.

He walked in without weapons, his hands in his pockets, dressed in a simple black wool sweater. He pulled a chair up to the metal table and sat down, looking at the woman he had known for fifteen years.

“Why, Gia?” Lorenzo asked softly.

Gia lifted her tear-streaked face, her lips curling into a manic, desperate smile. “Because I loved you, Lorenzo! Ever since college! But you chose Sofia—the quiet florist’s daughter who cried whenever you came home with a bruised knuckle! She wanted you to be an ordinary man! I wanted you to be a king!”

Lorenzo looked at her with profound pity.

“Sofia knew what true strength was, Gia,” Lorenzo said. “True strength is protecting the people you love without destroying your soul. You thought killing my wife and poisoning my baby would make you a queen. It only made you a monster.”

He stood up, sliding a single photograph onto the table.

It was the original portrait of Sofia holding newborn Nico on the day she gave birth—the photograph Gia had kept in her purse as a trophy.

“Sofia’s memory will live in our son's heart,” Lorenzo said, walking toward the door. “Your name will be forgotten before the week is over.”

“Lorenzo! Don't leave me here!” Gia screamed, thrashing against her handcuffs as the marshals entered the room. “Lorenzo!”

The heavy door clicked shut with a final, echoing thud.
