Chapter 6 - The Doctor's Interrogation

Downstairs in the reinforced security room, Dr. Victor Crane had completely broken.

Faced with the forensic blood analysis, the Montreal chemical receipts, and the reality of a life sentence in a federal maximum-security penitentiary, Crane surrendered everything.

Special Agent Miller and Detective Vance recorded his confession under active camera feeds.

“It was Gia’s plan from the beginning!” Crane blubbered, sweat pouring down his hollow cheeks. “She promised me three million dollars from the offshore trust! She wanted Nico to appear chronically disabled so Lorenzo would transfer guardianship before the boy's first birthday! When Lorenzo’s grief made him reckless, we were going to introduce a secondary cardiac glycoside into his private whiskey decanter!”

“And Sofia Bolaro?” Agent Miller asked coldly.

Crane buried his face in his trembling hands. “Gia paid me half a million to switch the heparin dosage after the C-section. She said Sofia was too pure for Lorenzo’s world... she said Lorenzo belonged to her.”

Detective Vance turned off the recording deck. “That constitutes First-Degree Capital Murder, Attempted Murder of an Infant, and Conspiracy under the RICO Act.”

As the federal marshals dragged Crane toward the transport van, he looked up at me standing in the doorway, his eyes filled with pathetic, broken realization.

“You were just a night nurse...” Crane whispered.

“I am a nurse who protects my patients,” I replied with quiet dignity. “You were a butcher with a license.”
