Chapter 11 - THE VOICE IN THE DARK

Norah woke in a windowless room.
Her wrists were tied.
Her head ached.
A man sat across from her.
Adrian Bell.
He smiled.
“Good morning, Miss Hayes.”
Norah stared.
“You're making a terrible career decision.”
Adrian laughed.
“Still sarcastic.”
She looked around.
“Where am I?”
“Somewhere Arthur can't find you.”
Norah swallowed.
Adrian leaned forward.
“You should have stayed out of the contracts.”
She met his eyes.
“You should have written better ones.”
His smile vanished.
He stood.
“You think Arthur will save you?”
Norah said nothing.
Adrian leaned closer.
“He can't even see his own hand.”
Norah's expression hardened.
“Funny.”
Adrian frowned.
“What?”
“For a man who can see perfectly, you've missed something obvious.”
He stared.
“What?”
Norah smiled.
“Arthur doesn't need his eyes to know you're a coward.”
Adrian struck the table.
Norah flinched.
But she didn't look away.
Outside the room, footsteps approached.
Then a familiar voice sounded.
“Norah?”
Her heart stopped.
Arthur.
Adrian froze.
The door opened.
And Arthur Cornero stood in the doorway.
Blind.
Holding a cane.
Flanked by investigators.
His face was calm.
Terrifyingly calm.
“Norah,” he said.
She began crying.
“I'm here.”
Arthur's expression broke.
He stepped forward.

Following her voice.
And when his hand found hers, he whispered, “I told you I would find you.”
