Chapter 8 - THE SECRET ROSA LEFT BEHIND
Inside the cookie tin, Norah discovered a second envelope.
It had been hidden beneath the lining.
She brought it to Gabriel.
He opened it carefully.
Inside was a photograph.
Victor Hayes.
Rosa.
A young Gabriel.
And another man.
Gabriel stared.
The man was familiar.
Older.
Smiling.
Wearing a dark suit.
Marcus DeLuca's father.
Gabriel looked up.
“Why would my mother keep this?”
Norah examined the back.
There was a handwritten date.
And a sentence.
The day I learned the truth.
Gabriel's heart pounded.
He turned the photograph over again.
Then noticed something.
Victor was holding a document.
The edge of a signature was visible.
Gabriel recognized the family crest.
It belonged to a company that had once controlled the docks.
A company Victor had acquired after its owner died under suspicious circumstances.
Gabriel stared.
His mother had known something about his father's rise to power.
