Chapter 14 - THE PROMISE BENEATH THE RAIN

Two years passed.
Gabriel's legitimate businesses survived.
His criminal operations did not.
He faced legal consequences for parts of his past and worked through the process with his attorneys.
He continued therapy.
Learned to manage the fear that had nearly killed him.
And slowly rebuilt his life.
Norah became a respected nurse.
She worked with vulnerable patients.
Helped expand community nutrition programs.
And continued visiting Benny's whenever she could.
Her relationship with Gabriel grew carefully.
They argued.
Apologized.
Learned.
One evening, they walked through the South End in the rain.
Gabriel stopped outside Benny's.
The neon sign had been repaired.
All the letters glowed.
Norah smiled.
“Remember the first night?”
Gabriel laughed softly.
“I was a nightmare.”
“You were starving.”
“And terrifying.”
She nodded.
“Also that.”
He took her hand.
“Norah, you saved my life.”
She shook her head.
“I made you dinner.”
He smiled.
“You reminded me I was still human.”
Her eyes filled.
Gabriel lowered himself onto one knee.
Norah froze.
He opened a small velvet box.
Inside was a simple ring.
“Will you marry me?”
Norah stared.
Then laughed through tears.
“Yes.”
Gabriel closed his eyes.
She nodded again.
“Yes, Gabriel.”
He stood.

She kissed him beneath the rain.
And for the first time, Gabriel Hayes felt truly safe.
